Workshop FAQ’s

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can attend?

Workshops are open to adults ages 18 and older. Writers of all experience levels are welcome.

Do I need writing experience?

Not at all. Whether you’ve never written before or have been writing for years, you’ll find a welcoming space to explore your creativity. All you need is curiosity and a willingness to write.

What happens during a workshop?

Each workshop includes a brief welcome, thoughtfully designed writing prompts, quiet writing time, and the opportunity (never the obligation) to share your writing with the group. Workshops are facilitated using the Amherst Writers & Artists (AWA) method, creating a respectful, encouraging environment where every voice is valued.

What is the AWA method?

The Amherst Writers & Artists (AWA) method is a strengths-based approach that begins with the belief that everyone is inherently a writer. Writing is treated as fiction unless the writer chooses otherwise, and all feedback focuses on what is strong, memorable, and effective in the writing rather than criticism.

Do I have to share what I write?

No. Sharing is always optional. You’re welcome to share your writing or simply enjoy the writing experience privately.

How many people are in each workshop?

To create a supportive and engaging experience, workshops are limited to eight participants.

Can I attend just one workshop?

Absolutely. Each workshop is a complete experience, so you can attend a single session or join as many as you’d like.

Are the prompts the same each time?

No. Every workshop features new prompts and activities, making each session a fresh and unique experience.

What kinds of writing will we do?

Depending on the workshop, prompts may inspire memoir, poetry, fiction, journaling, personal reflection, or creative nonfiction. There are no right or wrong responses, you are encouraged to write wherever the prompt leads you.

What should I bring?

Bring a notebook and pen or your favorite writing device. For online workshops, you’ll also need a reliable internet connection and a comfortable place to write.

Are workshops offered online and in person?

Yes. I offer both virtual and in-person workshops. The format and location are listed with each event.

How long are the workshops?

Most workshops are either 90 or 120 minutes, unless otherwise noted.

How do I register?

Registration is required in advance because space is limited. Your spot is reserved once payment has been received.

Do I need to pay in advance?

Yes. Advance payment is required to reserve your place in the workshop.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please refer to the individual workshop registration page for cancellation details. Because space is limited, advance notice is appreciated if you are unable to attend.

Will my writing be critiqued?

No. These are generative writing workshops, not critique groups. The focus is on discovering your voice, exploring ideas, and writing in a supportive community.

Will I leave with finished writing?

Yes! Every workshop is designed so you’ll leave with new pieces of writing. Whether it’s a poem, journal entry, story, reflection, or the beginning of a larger project, you’ll have something you’ve created during the session.

Are these workshops confidential?

Yes. Participants are asked to respect the privacy of one another. What is written and shared in the workshop stays within the group.

Are these workshops therapy?

No. While writing can be deeply meaningful and supportive of wellbeing, these workshops are educational and creative experiences. They are not therapy or a substitute for mental health treatment.

What if I become emotional while writing?

Writing can sometimes bring unexpected emotions to the surface. You’re always encouraged to care for yourself, take a break if needed, and share only what feels comfortable. My workshops are facilitated with compassion and respect for every participant.

Do you offer private workshops?

Yes. I facilitate private workshops for community organizations, nonprofits, libraries, schools, businesses, and other groups. Workshops can be customized to meet your group’s goals and interests.

Do you offer workplace wellness workshops?

Are you available for conferences, retreats, and special events?

Absolutely. I facilitate interactive writing workshops, keynote presentations, and breakout sessions for conferences, retreats, wellness events, and professional gatherings. Speaking topics include writing for wellbeing, writing to heal, resilience, creativity, and my lived experience of healing through writing.

Do you offer gift certificates?

Yes! Gift certificates are available and make a thoughtful gift for writers, creatives, or anyone looking for time to reflect, write, and reconnect with themselves.

Do you offer scholarships or sliding-scale opportunities?

I believe writing should be accessible. If cost is a barrier, please reach out to explore available scholarship or sliding-scale options.

What makes these workshops different from a traditional writing class?

Write, Heal, Thrive workshops combine the creative power of writing with a trauma-informed, strengths-based approach. They are not about grammar, grades, or perfect writing, but about the belief that everyone is already inherently a writer with a unique voice worth discovering. Rather than focusing on critique or correction, we create a supportive, small-group community where creativity, curiosity, and authentic expression are encouraged.

Final Thoughts

Whether you come to spark creativity, deepen self-reflection, or simply enjoy writing in community, you’ll be welcomed into a space where every voice matters. My goal is not to teach you how to write “correctly,” but to help you discover, trust, and strengthen your own authentic voice. You’ll leave not only with new writing, but also with greater confidence in your ability to express yourself on the page.
